Dr. Shi´s teaching experience is mainly related to Genetics. He gives lectures on "Genetics", “Introduction to Modern Genetics” and "Crop Breeding Science" to undergraduate students and lectures to graduate students on "Quantitative Genetics", "Advances in Crop Science" and "Advances in Crop Breeding ". His research areas mainly include the studies of genetic mechanisms responsible for agronomic and seed quality traits in rice, rapeseed, cotton, Chinese kale or stevia; molecular mapping of seed quality traits; the application of near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy to crop quality analysis; utilization for the heterosis of hybrid rice; germplasm enhancement or biotechnology in crop improvement and rice breeding which combines high yield andresistance with good quality. He has released five new rice varieties ("Zhenong 8010", "Zhenong 921", "Zhenong 952", "Zhenong 7" and "Zhenong 34"). Together with his colleague(s) and students, Dr. Shi has published 4 books and 211 refereed papers (92 of which were published in internationally recognized journals). Some of these journals are: Genesis, Planta, Theoretical and Applied Genetics, Food Chemistry, Genetica, Genetical Research, Plant Science, Field Crops Research, Australian Journal of Agricultural Research, Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, Biochemical Genetics, Starch, Journal of Plant Nutrition, Euphytica, Plant Breeding, Hereditas, Journal of Genetics, European Journal of Lipid Science and Technology, Genetics and Molecular Biology, Cereal Research Communication, Seed Science and Technology, Indian Journal of Agricultural Science, Acta Botanica Sinica, Spectroscopy and Spectral Analysis, Acta Genetica Sinica, Acta Agronomica Sinica, Scientia Agricultura Sinica, Chinese Journal of Rice Science. Among the researches he conducted there has been many novel results especially in the analysis of genetic effects from different genetic systems including embryo, endosperm, cytoplasmic and maternal plant for seed quality traits across environments, the dynamic mechanism for the analysis of different genetic systems for seed quality, the identification of endosperm and maternal plant QTLs for seed quality across different environments, and the application of near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy in crop quality analysis,.
Until to now, Dr. Shi is responsible for 2 international research programs, 4 research programs granted by National Natural Science Foundation of China, 2 research programs granted by Zhejiang Provincial Natural Science Foundation of China and 1 research program granted by Ministry of Education of China, as well as 8 research programs granted by Science and Technology office of Zhejiang Province of China.
