Dr. Jiazhang Lian is a principle investigator in the College of Chemical and Biological Engineering at Zhejiang University. His research focuses on the construction and optimization of cell factories using metabolic engineering and synthetic biology approaches. One such effort is to construct platform cell factories with enhanced supply of some general precursor metabolites (i.e. pyruvate and acetyl-CoA) fthat can be used for efficient production of value-added compounds. The other effort is to develop novel synthetic biology tools, particularly the CRISPR/Cas based genome engineering tools, to facilitate the development of cell factories. His group is also interested in expanding the developed synthetic biology tools in new applications in environment biotechnology and drug discovery.

Dr. Lian has published around 20 peer-reviewed papers at high impact journals such as Metabolic Engineering, ACS Synthetic Biology, and Biotechnology and Bioengineering, and given several presentations in international conferences, such as AIChE annual meetings, SEED, and SIMB annual meeting. His research achievements have won him a couple of prestigious fellowships and awards, such as the Drickamer Fellowship, Shen Postdoc Fellowship, and the Award to attend the Global Young Scientists Summit in Singapore. He is invited as an associate editor of the journal BMC Biotechnology and peer reviewers for a panel of biotechnology related journals, such as Metabolic Engineering, Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology, Biotechnology for Biofuels, Microbial Cell Factories, Journal of Industrial Microbiology and Biotechnology, Enzyme and Microbial Technology, Biochemical Engineering Journal, BMC Biotechnology.
