Neural circuit and brain disorders

 Prof. Han Xu is a member of the national “Thousand Young Talent program”. He has spent years studying the development and function of cortical circuits and made important findings (Neuron, 2013; J Neurosci. 2007; 2010; 2012). His research focuses on neuronal circuits underlying social interaction behavior and social deficits associated with neuropsychiatric disorders including anxiety, depression and autism. His research is supported by grants from the National Key R&D Program of China, the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the Outstanding Youth Fund of Zhejiang Province.

 

Research work

Normal brain functions rely on a delicate balance between excitation and inhibition. We are interested in understanding the development, function and plasticity of cortical inhibitory circuits. Our work lead to the discovery of a novel disinhibitory microcircuit in the neocortex through interaction between subtypes of inhibitory neurons, and suggest that disinhibition represents an important circuit mechanism for cortical information processing. Our works also reveal that the cortical inhibitory circuit is determined by a combination of both genetic and environmental factors.
