Dr. Bate is a "100-Talents Program" Professor at Zhejiang University. He was a recipient of the "1000 Yong Talents Program" Fund by the Organization Department of CPC Central Committee in 2017. Dr. Bate earned his B.E. degree from Tsinghua University in 2002. He then started his graduate study in Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) through a graduate recruiting program between HKUST and Chinese Ministry of Education. After receiving his M.Phil. degree in Civil Engineering from HKUST in 2005, Dr. Bate continued his graduate study in Georgia Institute of Technology, and obtained his Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering in 2011. Afterward Dr. Bate joined The Missouri University of Science and Technology as a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Geotechnical Engineering Program of the Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering. In 2016, He joined the Institute of Geotechnical Engineering at Zhejiang University.

As a principal investigator, Dr. Bate has secured about 1.4 million USD (personal share) in research funding surrounding geoenvironmental engineering area since 2011. His major funding resources include the Organization Department of CPC Central Committee, NSFC, Zhejiang University, USDOT, University of Missouri Research Board, Missouri S&T and AREVA energy company. He has advised or is advising 2 postdoctoral research fellows (both finished), 2 Phd students (1 graduated), 1 joint-Phd student, 3 master students (2 graduated) and 3 senior students for final year project (1 graduated). He published 15 top-tier journal papers, with 11 as either the 1st or the corresponding author, in areas of geoenvironmental engineering and clay science, including ASCE Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering, Applied Clay Science, Journal of Colloid and Interface Science, and Cement and Concrete Research.

Research work

Organic and biological soil modification and its applications in various barrier systems (landfill liners, permeable reactive barriers); Micro- and meso-scale characterization of soils with mechanical and electrical waves, physicochemical properties, hypergravity, and optical/electron microscopy; Chemical enhanced oil recovery with organic modified soil-water-air interfaces; Transport and retardation of nuclear ions in soils.
