Profile

Dr. Bate joined the Institute of Geotechnical Engineering at Zhejiang University as a "100-Talents Program" Professor (Level-A) in Fall 2016 semester. Dr. Bate earned his B.E. from Tsinghua University in 2002. He then started his graduate study in Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) through a graduate recruiting program between HKUST and Chinese Ministry of Education. After receiving his master degree in Civil Engineering from HKUST in 2005, Dr. Bate continued his graduate study in Georgia Institute of Technology, where he obtained his Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering in 2011. Afterward Dr. Bate joined The Missouri University of Science and Technology as a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Geotechnical Engineering Program of the Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering. 

Research work

Organic and biological soil modification and its applications in various barrier systems (landfill liners, permeable reactive barriers); Micro- and meso-scale characterization of soils with mechanical and electrical waves, physicochemical properties and optical/electron microscopy; Chemical enhanced oil recovery with organic modified soil-water-air interfaces; Transport and retardation of nuclear ions in soils.
