Dr. Chengyong Shen is a professor and PI of Zhejiang University. He graduated from Nankai University in 2001, majored in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. In 2008 he obtained his Ph.D. from Shanghai Institute of Biochemistry and Cell biology at Chinese Academy of Sciences. Then Dr. Shen continued his research as a postdoctor in Department of Neuroscience and Regenerative Medicine at Medical College of Georgia in USA during 2008 to 2014, and worked as an assistant research scientist from 2014 to 2015. Dr.Shen joined Institute of Translational Medicine of Zhejiang University and became an independent PI from June 2015.
Synapse is a communicating contact between two neurons or a neuron and its targets. It's a fundamental unit of neural circuitry and enables complex behaviors. Using CNS synapse and PNS synapse (neuromuscular junction) as models, Dr. Shen’s lab tries to better understand:
1. The mechanisms of synapse formation and plasticity;
2. The establishment of motor circuits;
3. The translational medical research of synaptic disordes such as Myasthesnia gravis and Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
