Shao Kai Tseng
My Chinese name is Shao Kai, and I go by Alex. I was born in Taiwan and raised in Canada. Having completed a Double Major in Physics and German at the University of British Columbia, I continued on to pursue theological studies at Regent College (MDiv, 2008), Princeton Theological Seminary (ThM, 2009), and the University of Oxford (MSt, 2011; DPhil, 2014).
I am tenured as Research Professor in the School of Philosophy at ZJU, having joined the ZJU faculty via the "Hundred Talents Program" in 2017. I am the author of Trinity and Election: The Christocentric Reorientation of Karl Barth's Speculative Theology (Bloomsbury T&T Clark, 2023), Karl Barth (P&R, 2021), Immanuel Kant (P&R, 2020), Barth's Ontology of Sin and Grace (Routledge, 2018), G. W. F. Hegel (P&R, 2018), and Karl Barth's Infralapsarian Theology (IVP Academic, 2016). I am also a contributor to the Oxford Handbook of Nineteenth-Century Christian Thought (Oxford University Press, 2017), Wiley-Blackwell Companion to Karl Barth (Wiley-Blackwell, 2020), and T&T Clark Handbook of Neo-Calvinism (Bloomsbury, 2023). My academic articles have been published in English, Chinese, and German.
I currently serve as adjunct faculty at Columbia International University (CIU) and two other institutions in the United States. One of my primary administrative roles is Ph.D. program associate director in the Kepha Institute at CIU. My professional affiliations include the Karl Barth Society of North America, the American Academy of Religion, and Evangelical Theological Society. I am on the steering committee of the Methods in Systematic Theology group in the Evangelical Theological Society. I also serve as a member of the editorial committees of Neue Zeitschrift für Systematische Theology und Religionsphilosophie (coverage: A&HCI, etc.), Logos and Pneuma: Chinese Journal of Theology (coverage: A&HCI; R&TA; Scopus), and Sino-Christian Studies (coverage: A&HCI), and as associate editor of Brill's Journal of Chinese Theology (Yearbook of Chinese Theology).
